Thank you for all the feedback so far, you are too kind! I am glad to hear people don't mind seeing a mixed bag of posts, as sometimes I prefer to simply post what I am currently loving, rather than meticulously planning posts months in advance. I guess every blogger just has to find what method works best for them! On a different note, I have been consciously soaking up the final days of warm weather lately, before Autumn sets in for good. These images really capture some of the lovely things that will soon be gone around here... bright flowers, yellow cotton sun dresses, beach trips, espadrilles, chilled wine on the balcony, relaxing outside with fresh blueberries and a magazine. ♥

Although it is now officially Autumn here, this weekend we have been blessed with beautiful summer-like weather. I jumped at the chance to get another wear out of my cotton summer dresses, before they get buried at the back of my wardrobe or under layers of clothing. After a whirlwind week, I made an effort to have a relaxing and indulgent weekend, involving a morning trip to the beach, frozen yoghurt, a mani/pedi, playing dress-ups in Review (a favourite clothing store) and dinner at our local Italian restaurant, amongst other things. Flapper Doodle March

This year I have been keeping track of the days with this gorgeous black and white calender, illustrated by the lovely Kate of Flapper Doodle. I thought I would share it with you now as the illustration for March is my absolute favourite! I hope that it serves as a good omen for the month, as life has been a bit of a rollercoaster lately. I love the Flapper Doodle girls, they seem like the perfect mix of elegant and fun. The headbands are leftover from the 1920s hens night, but I can definitely see myself wearing them again in day-to-day life (I love a good headband to save a bad hair day).

A Mint and Coral Wedding

This weekend we attended the gorgeous wedding of my brother and his fiancé. It was such a lovely day, and a wonderful example of making a small budget go a long way using handmade and vintage pieces. All of the flowers were bought at the flower markets and we stayed up the night before putting together bouquets for the ladies and boutonnieres for the men. The tables were adorned with vintage floral placemats and lace doilies, along with vintage teapots, cups and saucers. The reception venue was decorated with handmade bunting made from mint polka dot fabric and hessian with hand painted lettering. The lolly bar table was set with old glass jars wrapped in ribbon. The bride even made her own headpiece using leftover baby roses. Here are a few quick photographs I took on my phone (I didn't bring my camera as I knew it would be too tempting to snap away all day, and I really wanted to relax and live in the moment!).

You may have noticed I have been a little quieter in the blogosphere this week. I spent the weekend away at a gorgeous 1920s themed hens party, and I will be off again this weekend for a wedding. I am thrilled to be a bridesmaid for the first time, and while I have heard a few horror stories about terrible bridesmaid dresses, we are fortunate that our own bride-to-be has very lovely taste, and has chosen this vintage-inspired coral dress by Review. It matches perfectly with my OPI 'Chapel of Love' nail polish (and the name fits nicely with the whole wedding theme!). Review: Sirens Swimwear

I have noticed that when I receive emails from my lovely readers (a nice change from all of those claim your million dollar prize emails!) they usually relate to an item I have posted on this blog or Instagram... a question about sizing or quality or simply the best stockists. It has inspired me to occasionally write review posts, in case it helps you with your online shopping adventures!

Living in warm-weather Sydney (with its numerous beaches), I am often on the look out for the perfect swimsuit. This summer I was particularly interested in a retro-inspired one-piece. I wanted something that would last a few seasons, and I needed something that offered support for my D-cups. After a lot of searching, I settled on the Sirens Classic from Sirens Swimwear in the black polka dot colourway. It was a little pricey, but I justified it on a cost-per-wear basis. I am pleased to say it has lasted numerous wears-and-washes without fading and I feel very comfortable and secure in it, even when the sea is really rough (thanks to the in-built bust support and full lining). I am between sizes on their size chart, and chose to size up to the AU12, which fits well. Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions! Weekend Wear: A Collar and Florals

I have eased up a little with my obsession with full skirts and A-line silhouettes, and have started to embrace pencil skirts and 60s shapes as well. It's always nice to mix things up a bit (even if it's only moving between one dress style and another!). I wore this outfit to a friend's farewell last night... there is nothing quite like a cold cider, good music and friends on a warm summer night. What have you been up to this weekend? x

Happy Saturday everyone. I don't know about you, but in my opinion the weekend couldn't come fast enough! I have been super busy at work, and then out-of-action for a few days with a migraine, and so I am really looking forward to spending the weekend getting back on top of everything (all the usual life stuff... returning emails, tidying the house, home cooking, making plans, catching up with friends). So I took a few pictures before I started scribbling all over it with important dates, to-do lists and random thoughts. It's interesting to look back over your diary at the end of the year and see what filled the days; everything from mundane appointments to life-changing events. I really hope by the start of 2013, this little diary has been filled to the brim! x

365 Days

Happy first birthday blog! ♥ It's been a really fun and interesting twelve months and I have enjoyed every minute, from slowly learning about photography and HTML, to developing my personal style. But by far the best thing about the year has been getting to know all of you! I have received so many thoughtful comments, helpful tips and words of support, and I have made friends with some of the loveliest blogger ladies (a couple of them even live on the other side of the world!). I can't thank you all enough (but I will try, with a little giveaway coming up in the next few weeks).

A February Commitment

I recently stumbled across Frugal February - an annual event where people commit to drastically cut down their spending for the month of February (the specific goal is, 'to avoid shopping for anything other than essentials'). I love the general concept and the timing couldn't be better - I don't know about you, but I have really splurged over the past two months on Christmas presents and holiday celebrations.

Rather than strictly follow the Frugal February rules, I was inspired to come up with my own five spending commitments for the month (and hopefully beyond, but let's start with baby steps!). Do you have any spending commitments for February, or even any savings tips? I would love to hear them!

♥ DIY Beauty Salon - It's lovely to treat yourself to a manicure every now and then, but lately I go way too often! It's time to start getting back into DIY-manicures with my nail polish collection at home. I will also be using a cheap-but-effective face moisturiser every second night to make my pricey Aspect serum last much longer (I have heard good things about the Cetaphil range - any other recommendations?).

♥ Pause the Magazines - I am a magazine reader, I love to flick through them on the tram ride when there is not enough time to get engrossed in a full-blown novel. This month I will have a break from accumulating new magazines. I already have a subscription to Vogue (a thoughtful gift) and so I will try to organise a swap with friends.

♥ Bring Lunch From Home - I often splurge money on lunch at work and justify it on the basis that what I am eating is healthy and fresh. But there is no reason I cannot make my own healthy salads and sandwiches from scratch (for a quarter of the cost) and bring them from home. Note to self: look-up some new salad recipes to try!

♥ Fashion Fund - I have used this trick before and it works a treat. You are only allowed to buy new fashion items if you sell some of your old pieces first (either on eBay or at the local markets). The money you earn from your selling becomes your 'fashion fund' which you can spend guilt-free. If you really want something, you have to sacrifice something else.

♥ Changing Focus - I am going to focus on doing the things I love (like crafting and exploring new places) and catching up with old friends (you know those times when you say to old friends 'let's catch up... it's been too long... I'll call you...' and then the meet-up never gets organised? I am going to organise those catch-ups!).

A Summer Outfit

We made the most of the sunshine today with a relaxing stroll around the neighbourhood. I really needed the fresh air to recover from cocktails with Aelie and Holly last night. I have been trying to mix up my outfits a bit more lately (I even purchased pants!), although I possibly regressed with this floral-dress-and-bow-wedges ensemble. Sometimes you just have to go with your instincts, and it really felt like the right thing to wear today, especially given the weather. I am off to mend and hem a pile of dresses that has been haunting me for months. Happy Saturday! x

Vintage Finds: Floral Cups and Plates

I have wanted a set of vintage floral cups forever, but with the growing popularity of thrifting (meaning the best pieces are snapped up immediately) and the inflated prices here in Sydney, I had almost given up on finding anything in a bricks-and-mortar shop. My luck changed earlier this week when I spotted this pretty cup-and-saucer set, and a pair of dinner plates, hidden at the back of a local charity store. The plates are perfect for summer salads, and the cups have made my morning coffee routine feel so much more fancy - a good start to the day! x

Looking Forward

Some people say that new year's resolutions are a waste of time... I am definitely not one of them! I am a huge believer in setting goals, and I love taking a few moments at this time of year to think about what I want to achieve over the next 12 months. I have decided to share my list of 2012 resolutions here on the blog, in the hope that it will keep me accountable (and also in case it inspires other people to write a list too!) I have tried to stick to tangible goals (well, mostly) as they are much easier to follow. It will be really interesting to look back on this post at the end of the year and see how many items can be crossed off...

♥ Travel overseas (my biggest regret of 2011 is letting a whole year go by without visiting a new country)

♥ Re-decorate our terrace house (as we rent, decorating from wall-to-wall can feel a bit futile... but I have decided that our house needs to feel more like a home, even if it is only a temporary one)

♥ Organise my wardrobe

♥ Take my camera everywhere (it will become a handbag staple like my wallet or keys)

♥ Cook one new vegetarian meal a week

♥ Train to run 5k (this may not seem like a long distance at all, but trust me, it is for me!)

♥ Give the blog a mini makeover

♥ Be grateful for the small joys in life... the smell of coffee, sunshine, fresh flowers

♥ Grow herbs and vegetables in our courtyard (how great would it be to make a summer salad from ingredients in your own backyard?!)

♥ Study a short course in a creative field

♥ Write a monthly money budget (and stick to it)

♥ Be a better friend and reach out to new friends (this is a big one for me as I am shy)

♥ Create (and complete) a 2012 photography project

♥ Sell at least one piece of handmade clothing or craft on Etsy

♥ Don't let the weekends slip by; spend the free time mindfully and intentionally

♥ Write out a life bucket list and hang it on my dressing table mirror where it will be seen every morning

♥ Read one fiction book per month

♥ Start a Tumblr

♥ Be kinder, more thoughtful and more genorous (I know this is not really a tangible goal, but I felt it was important to include)

One of the best things about having a blog is being able to look back on the year gone by. So I may cringe in embarrassment a little at my first posts, or questionable outfit choices, but overall it has been a fun and enjoyable learning curve! I always get butterflies at the end of the year thinking about how time is flying by and yet my 'bucket list' is growing longer. But instead of focusing on the things I haven't yet found time to do, I have decided to look back at some of the highlights of 2011...

Christmas Time

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas break. I have just returned from four days of visiting and celebrating with family. I will admit that I wayyyy overindulged, but I'm sure most people do at this time of year! It was refreshing to get away from the city and enjoy a bit of country life on the farm. We were also blessed with sunshine on Sunday, which was such a nice change from the constant summer rain of late. Anyway, I am off to brunch to give me the strength to unpack and do some house cleaning! x

It's almost time for the Christmas break! My present shopping is just about complete, and everything is wrapped and ready to go (I couldn't resist using floral wrapping paper, at least for the girls!) I am really looking forward to visiting my family down on their property over the Christmas weekend... home cooked meals, living in cotton dresses, eating fresh organic veggies from the garden, reading on the porch, swimming in my new polka dot one-piece, and generally relaxing. I managed to find a little spot at a park to take some sneaky outfit photos with my tripod this weekend. A few people did walk pass but I am getting really used to the stares, I notice them less each day. This weekend has been filled with highs and lows; dinner and drinks with a long lost friend lasting well into the witching hour, a summer barbeque by the pool, and the very sad news that a lovely family we know have lost their home to fire. With Christmas only around the corner, I have been madly searching Etsy for wonderful handmade and vintage pieces to give to my loved ones. I believe it is important to support small businesses and independent designers and artists, particularly at this time of year. Unfortunately I have encountered two major problems with my online browsing... (1) I want to keep everything for myself! (2) My 'favourites' list is now 12 pages long! One Week to Better Blogging

Throughout this week, the lovely Amber Rose is running One Week to Better Blogging, a series of posts by different bloggers filled with information and advice on a range of blogging topics including photography, design, effective writing, regular features and networking. If you are interested in improving your blog, you should definitely check it out! Last night we headed off to a birthday soiree organised by miss holly for her boyfriend, held at the cutest little cocktail bar. It was a really warm Spring night, perfect for being out and about and enjoying a drink. The evening was a whole lot of fun, mostly due to the lovely people in attendance but also due to the fantastic playlist holly put together! I was also really pleased with how my heels lasted a long night of standing without causing too much trouble, I think the mary-jane strap helped a lot. Now I am off to relax and enjoy the rest of my Sunday, I hope you are too! ♥

A Milestone

Mr GiveMeBows and I just celebrated our 7 year anniversary with a fancy-shmancy night out ♥ It was such a treat! I can't believe how fast the time has passed since we first met. I immediately developed a huge crush on my handsome new friend... but I was SUCH a shy little thing having just moved to the city from a small country town, I really thought he was way out of my league! Luckily for me he didn't agree. x

While I love my play clothes, the truth is that four days a week I wear office-appropriate attire. I have been trying to make it a bit more fun by taking cue from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Mad Men has also been a very useful source of inspiration. After a request from a sweet reader, I have decided to post office outfits every now and then ♥

This candy stripe shirt dress is from the late 40s and it was my first vintage reconstruction project (more on that later!) I moved the waist higher, added pleats, added darts to the back for a slimmer fit, and took the hem up. It turned out okay, although I now have a long list of things I can improve on next time. Happy Monday! x

I have a confession to make... I went out and bought this dress the second I saw it on Kate Gabrielle. The print was just so sweet, and when I discovered that Trollied Dolly shipped to Australia (for around $10!) I figured that it was meant to be. I am loving the Spring weather lately, it's so easy to throw on a dress and flats and look reasonably well dressed with minimal time or effort - this is particularly handy when we are heading out to brunch and I haven't yet had a coffee so my brain is too foggy to think straight! ♥

In the Shade of the Tree

We snapped a few quick outfit shots after breakfast on Sunday in a nearby park. You may recall I made this skirt back in March, and I am pleased to say it is still going strong after many wears and washes (it's a miracle!). Now I just need to learn how to sew blouses too, as I always have trouble finding them. This peter pan collar blouse is cute and comfortable, but unfortunately the buttons are prone to popping open during the course of the day, leaving me a little over exposed! Thankfully it can be fixed by sewing the buttonholes a little smaller. ♥

A Beach Ritual

Over the spring and summer months, our weekend brunch-at-a-local-cafe ritual gets replaced with brunch at the beach! I can be a bit of a wimp when the water is cold, so I usually sit and read while the boy swims. Then when we are deliriously hungry we wander up to one of the cafes. So I look a little crazy in my hat, oversized sunnies and sleeved-dress, but you gotta do what you gotta do when you're pale! I hope everyone is having a darling weekend so far ♥

Love Your Body Day

Today is 'Love Your Body' day and sweet Ashley of Two Eyes in the Mirror has called on bloggers to post about the things we like, even love, about our bodies and/or how we got there. I will admit that there have been times when I have looked in the mirror and focused on the negative rather than the positive. Thankfully those days are becoming more infrequent as I grow older and become more comfortable in my skin, but they still happen. So to contribute to 'Love Your Body Day', I have listed some of the things that help me feel good about my body ♥

♥ Embrace What You Cannot Change: We are all born with a unique set of genes, and try as we might, wish as we may, there is only so much we can do to change our body. I'm sure you've heard people say this before, but one of the best things I ever did was to stop trying to fight against or hide my curves. It was a hopeless battle! Now I have learned to accept, dress for and slowly-but-surely like my hourglass shape. If there is something you have always disliked about your body, try to let it go once and for all ♥

♥ A Little Pampering: Chances are that if your nail polish is mostly chipped off, and your hair hasn't been washed in too-many-days-to-admit-out-loud, you aren't feeling on top of the world. It sounds so trivial but when I put aside an extra half an hour each night to do a manicure, wash and blowdry my hair, or simply moisturise my legs, I feel so much fresher, prettier and more in control of the chaos that is my life.

♥ Eat Well: I definitely feel lighter, healthier and more energetic when I have been eating well consistently for a week or more. It doesn't involve any crazy diets or strict rules, I just try to up my intake of natural foods. It takes your taste buds a while to adjust to the taste of natural foods (without the added salt/sugar/flavours found in processed foods) so don't get deterred if you find it difficult at first.

♥ Move Your Body: Exercise and I are not friends (we never really liked each other very much). Still, I will be the first to admit that when I get into the habit of exercising regularly, the benefits far outweigh the pain. I feel better, I have more energy, I sleep better, my skin is clearer, I handle stress better, and I can carry the grocery bags without wincing! I am not a gym girl; I prefer things like pole dancing lessons, boxacise, and more recently boot camp.

♥ Affirm Your Beauty: It is so cheesy, but occasionally we need to remind ourselves of our positive traits (that's what today is all about). They say that the brain has trouble distinguishing between when you are imagining an event, and when you are in-real-life experiencing an event - they both affect the pathways in the brain. So I don't think it's farfetched to say that saying affirmations (of our beauty/worth/value) can positively influence our confidence in the long-term. I have always liked the concept behind Operational Beautiful, where people are encouraged to leave positive/affirming post-it notes in public places.

Seeing Spots

I really do love Springtime - I feel so much more positive, hopeful and excited about everything. So... I know I said I wouldn't collect any more floral dresses, but to be fair, I ordered this little bundle of goodies for Spring/Summer a few weeks ago before I publicly made such a commitment! I did a wardrobe clean out recently, and had a small pot of earnings leftover from eBay sales to use, so I don't feel too guilty about it (maybe just a little). It dawned on me that I could have possibly attempted to handmake similar dresses and skirts myself, but (a) I have been a bit short on time lately (b) I am not that talented yet and (c) I can use these pieces as inspiration. Little Pretties

It sounds silly I know, but I have been trying a new thing lately where I wake up each morning and think to myself 'what can I do to make today worthwhile?'. It helps to prevent those auto-pilot weeks where you just go through the motions of your routine, but nothing particularly constructive or memorable happens. I am consciously making something of the day, whether by crossing things off a to-do list that have been lingering around (and haunting me!) for months; or making more time for hobbies, even if I am super tired from work; or simply appreciating the small things each day (with a little help from Instagram!...)

Our neighbourhood is filled to the brim with flowers and picket fences (clichéd but kind of sweet)...

Drinking too much coffee (everyone is allowed a vice!)...

Getting dressed up is always kind of nice...

After almost a year in this neighbourhood, on Sunday we discovered a new brunch cafe hidden amongst terrace houses only a few blocks from our house. It has striped awnings and pastel wrought iron chairs, a chalk board menu and potted flowers = super cute. I have probably been guilty lately of indulging in one too many of these 'relaxed weekends at home' consisting of long brunch dates, reading and sewing... it's been so lovely, but as an introvert, I really need to push myself to go out a bit more (or I end up feeling slightly lonely! My own fault). Now that the weather is warming up and the nights are getting longer, I am going to put in the effort to go on more outings and adventures! ♥

Thank you so much for your well wishes and fantastic book recommendations, I am finally feeling better and my 'to read' list is now a mile long, yay! This is an outfit from earlier in the week when we were experiencing beautiful Spring weather. I (probably prematurely) packed away my bulky winter coats, and so far I am loving having the extra room in my rather small wardrobe to flick through my dresses. We renewed our lease today, and now I know we are staying here a while longer, I am off to do a big Spring clean of the house and browse Etsy for cute art and homewares! Have a lovely weekend ♥

A handmade floral frock

I finished my first Spring dress, which is perfect timing really because tomorrow is the first day of Spring here. While it's not perfect, I am pretty pleased with how it turned out ♥ (I thought it was even worth taking a few snaps with my tripod in the middle of a public street! Yes, I braved public humiliation for these, ha).

The pattern I used is New Look 6805 A, with a slightly higher neckline. The pattern fit me well, so I didn't have to make too many scary adjustments! I just added a 1/2cm to the bodice on each side (by simply sewing a smaller seam allowance). It was quite an easy pattern to follow for a beginner (well, with a little help from my good friends Google and Youtube...) I may use the pattern again to make a different version with my pink fabric, with a slightly higher waist and much fuller skirt. And now that Esz has kindly pointed me in the direction of all the amazing vintage patterns available on Etsy, I have a list a mile long of patterns I want to try! ♥

Sewing for Spring

I am working on handmaking a few lightweight, vintage-inspired dresses to wear during Spring! I have loads of motivation right now - it will improve my beginner sewing skills + it will hopefully save me some pennies + I can use comfortable and breathable fabrics (rather than restrictive polyester) + it won't matter if the shops aren't stocking styles that suit me. Yay. I have started to collect a stash of fabric in pretty colours and prints, and to read through the vintage box of sewing instruction cards that my mum gifted to me. If anyone has any pattern recommendations, please let me know. ♥

If there is one thing at the absolute top of my Spring wish list, it would be a new retro/pin-up inspired swimsuit! I am a curvy girl, and I am also very pale in a country that is still obsessed with having a tan, so finding a swimsuit I feel good in is a must. We usually end up at the beach every second weekend, although due to my PPP skin (pale porcelein princess - ha) you will usually find me hiding under our huge beach umbrella with a few good books and a plate of fresh fruit. Which swimsuit is your favourite? I can't decide! ♥

New Look (and a few reasons to blog)

You may have noticed things are slightly different around here today. It was my 6 month 'blogoversary' (ha) a few weeks ago, and I thought it was time for a little blog update. So I asked the gorgeous Kate of Scathingly Brilliant to create a new header for Give Me Bows. I didn't really know exactly what I wanted, so I left it up to Kate to design something sweet to match my style... and what an absolutely lovely job she has done! Isn't she talented! ♥

I've noticed there has been a bit of criticism aimed at bloggers recently (more so than usual) and it's easy to feel a little disheartened. So for anyone new to blogging, or thinking of starting a blog, I thought I would share some of the positive things I have gained through blogging, even in such a short space of time:

♥ An avenue for practicing and improving my photography skills. I have learned so much simply from trial and error, and having somewhere to share photographs has been extremely motivating. Other bloggers have also been particularly generous with passing on their knowledge.

♥ A bunch of new (online) friends. This has to be the best part of blogging, without a doubt. The community is so welcoming and supportive, and I have been introduced to such lovely, clever and talented ladies all over the globe.

♥ A basic understanding of HTML. It's taken a few late nights and a few too many coffees, but I am proud of the little tricks and tips I have learned so far (including how to customise a blog background and border, resize and align images, and create static pages).

♥ A creative space in which to write, think, design, collate and collage. A blog is like a giant scrapbook, only online. It's also somewhere to share my latest sewing and craft projects.

♥ A little bit more confidence. This is a slow process as I am very shy by nature, but I have definitely grown in confidence and self-understanding over the past few months. I feel like I am learning more about who I am. Your kind comments have been incredibly uplifting too!

I am looking forward to what the next 6 months will bring! (p.s. Mr Givemebows kept hurrying me to take the above picture so that he could devour the cupcake! Too funny) x

Un Normale Weekend

A peek at a rather simple but very enjoyable weekend. I distinctly remember as a young girl looking at all the adults around me and thinking (with disgust!) how could they all lead such ordinary lives? Weren't they bored? Unhappy? Unimaginative? I was certain I wouldn't be like them, and that I would spend every single day of adulthood doing extraordinary and wonderful things with not a moment to spare. Things I Love About Winter - Part 1

I just wanted to say a big thank you for all your lovely comments recently, they really make me smile ♥ The blogging community is such a lovely, supportive place, and I am so glad to be a part of it!

In other news, we still have over a month of winter to go here, but rather than moping around the house in my pyjamas and counting down the days until it ends, I have been trying to appreciate all the small things that make winter special (and that I will probably miss when summer rolls around!) I left work early on Friday to see a movie + stopped for a chai latte on the way home to escape the heavy rain + came home to find 3 parcels from Etsy waiting for me at the front door. Later in the evening my boyfriend (who doubles as my dvd watching buddy/housemate/weekend brunch date/personal chauffeur/best friend) arrived home from a month in Europe - so exciting! What a fabulous way to end the week ♥

Dollbaby Love

Another quote I enjoyed this week. I think there is often so much focus placed on the beginning of a relationship - first dates, flowers, all-night chats until sunrise - and much less attention paid to the wonderful later years in a relationship - the excitement of building a place to call home together, the joy of coming home to your best friend every night. I really love the perspective that the love you have accumulates year after year (rather than the perspective that there is a 'honeymoon phase' and then things fizzle out).

These outfit shots were taken over a month ago on the way to a dinner outing. Wear the clothes...

Okay so there is an elephant in the room today... my haircut! haha. I loathed it at first, it felt way too short (my fault for being shy and giving very vague instructions to the hairdresser) and I thought it made me look too much like I'm from an era gone by. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love 50s and 60s fashion and vintage style in general (if you can't half tell from my outfits!), but I always like to look like me when I wear vintage or vintage-inspired pieces, not a character from a show or a girl playing dress ups. Does that make any sense?

That said, it is actually slowly growing on me! And the silly thing is hair grows back anyway so there is no point being concerned about something so trivial. Hands up who is tired of freezing cold winter and completely envious of all the gorgeous summer outfits and talk of heat waves on the Northern hemisphere blogs? My hand is up! ♥

I have a confession to make... I am a HUGE quote person. I absolutely love anything philosophical, reflective or existential, and quotes very often tap into that kind of thinking. I am well aware that not everyone will agree with me and some people find quotes a bit life coach-y and silly, but I find them extremely useful and inspirational. I have started to make a habit of putting one or two quotes scribbled on a piece of paper on my dressing table mirror each week, to help put me in the right frame of mind every morning. Midweek Magic

Yes, it's always more exciting to take shots of exotic locations and big celebrations and new experiences, but the reality is that so many weeks during the year are not filled with such things. Snowflake Dress

Outfit shots from a lazy Sunday morning brunch with my sister. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. For all my whinging and whining about it being winter here, we are actually pretty lucky as it never really gets that cold! I love the polka dots on this dress as they remind me of snow falling on the ground. It never gets anywhere near 0 degrees or below here so I won't ever have an opportunity to take a photo of this dress IN the snow, which would be kind of fun.

A big thank you to my sister for being my photographer and waiting patiently every time a stranger walked passed and I refused to continue posing for photos until they were well into the distance! These heels are slightly difficult to walk in and I only get to wear them when we have a short distance to go to our destination, which is bit of a shame because I adore them. Thankfully my area is littered with cafes on every corner (well, almost!) so brunch is never too far away. I hope everyone had a lovely weekend ♥

Sister Shopping

I am lucky enough to have my sister staying with me this weekend... fun! Today we went shopping for over 5 hours straight... and would you believe I didn't buy anything the whole time? (Well, apart from a coffee and delicious blueberry muffin!) We were mostly looking for clothes for my sister, and I am pleased to say we were very successful. It has been SO long since I have shopped in a 'real' shop (as opposed to online), I had almost forgotten what it was like to deal with crowds, clothes thrown everywhere and keen sales assistants. I am glad to be home again and relaxing with a glass of wine! ♥

I have been browsing Etsy quite often lately in search of the perfect vintage brooch to add a little bit of personality to my winter wardrobe... wearing the same coats over and over can get very tiresome! Today I went on a lovely brunch date with miss hollypop. It was such a gorgeous sunny day, you would hardly believe it is the middle of winter here! We had a look around at a few vintage stores but didn't have any luck, I was mostly hoping to find some vintage fabric to use for sewing, and maybe some floral crockery. Me Time

This week was incredibly hectic, with so much high pressure stuff happening at work, late nights of drinking and eating bad food, and a few migraines thrown in the mix. I was exhausted by Friday night, and what I felt on the inside really showed on the outside - my skin was dull, my hair was a mess, my nail polish was chipped, my outfits were rumpled.

Mooreaseal has a little series of on her blog titled Paint Your Love where she talks about how important it is to invest time in yourself and strive to have a positive outlook on life. As part of this series, she paints her nails each week as a small, kind of silly, but worthwhile reminder to take care of and be kind to herself each day. While obviously how you look on the outside doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, I definitely agree with her sentiment that, very often, how you look on the outside is an accurate reflection of how you are feeling on the inside. And by looking after your body and appearance - even something as simple as painting your nails - you can positively influence your state of mind and your attitude towards the day ahead. Her series makes for an interesting read if you have some spare time.

So this morning I woke up early with a much better attitude, and resolved to get back on track and take better care of myself. After a healthy breakfast, fresh flowers and a fresh coat of nail polish, I am already regaining my energy (and my head has finally stopped pounding! Miracle ♥). I am off to clean the house from top to bottom and then take a new book down to the park by the water. I hope you too can take take some time this weekend to invest in yourself. Back to the secret garden today to take covert outfit of the day shots. I am pleased to report that taking photos in public does get slightly easier with time. Today a few people walked past, stopped and glared at me, but I found the best thing to do was to glare right back, which prompted them to keep on walking! ha. My hair is a little bit wild in these shots... this morning I prioritised going straight to brunch to satisfy my major caffeine-addiction/hunger over taming my hair. It was well worth it. A small exception

I don't follow fashion trends all that often, mostly because they just don't suit me. I am definitely not one of those naturally insanely-fashion-savvy people who can throw together anything and look fab! So I tend to stick to what I like and what suits my body shape.

I did however make an exception recently, after discovering these gorgeous sweedish hasbeens on blogs like calivintage. I have forever been hunting for the perfect summer sandal to wear with my dress collection... something a little bit vintage inspired, that isn't too formal or dressy. So when I found out swedish hasbeens were on sale on ASOS, I broke my otherwise very-well-disciplined shopping ban. And I don't feel guilty one little bit! (I have also started planning some outfits for when summer eventually comes around, to help justify the purchase...) Happy Friday x

Meet my golden half

...Not my Mister, but my adorable golden half camera ♥ I love this tiny little film camera as it fits in my pocket (when my dresses have pockets!) and it shoots half frames - meaning you end up with two images on each photograph. I just picked up my first roll of film from processing, and I was so relieved to see that not everything was dark and blurry like I had feared.

My only slight disappointment is that I completely lost track of how many shots I had taken early on, so when I was taking photographs, I couldn't 'pair up' the images I wanted to go together in my imagination (I hope that makes sense!) I have loads of ideas of things I want to shoot on the same frame, so next time I will stick a post-it note to the camera to keep track of whether I am up to the second half of a used frame, or the first half of a new frame! I also have some pictures of the neighbourhood to share soon. I hope everyone is having a lovely week x

Beyond the fence

I had the day off work today and it has been so refreshing! I went to our local cafe for a long breakfast with a pile of magazines + took some film photos of the neighbourhood + painted my nails + sorted my dressing table mess. And best of all, I managed to take a few sneaky outfit photos beyond the safety of my courtyard fence! I was super embarrassed the entire time, I completely froze like a deer in headlights when a man walked past and did a double-take at me (uhh, like standing still would make me somehow invisible?!) To be fair, I think the first step is always the hardest so hopefully it only gets easier from here on in. Happy Friday! ♥

Till We Meet Again

I did something I've never done before... packed away my summer clothes for the winter! This year is the first time in many, many years that I've had to share a wardrobe. And cramming everything into my little designated space was just getting too overwhelming. So lightweight summer dress + skirts have been boxed up, and won't be seen again until the warm weather returns. Strangely, it makes me a little anxious! What if I have nothing to wear? Or I want to wear a certain dress?

...On the whole though, I think it will be a positive change, as it will encourage me to mix and match a lot more to create new outfits, and get lots of wear out of my items. My wardrobe is so much neater now. And best of all, when Spring comes around, and I get to rip open the box, it will feel like I've been on a mini shopping spree, without spending a penny! ♥

Winter Dressing ♥

I have never been very talented at dressing in winter – yes, I feel that being able to layer clothing without turning into the michelin man is a talent! – and it is particularly difficult if you’re anything like me and 80% of your wardrobe consists of summer dresses. Without the money for a complete wardrobe overhaul, I have been thinking of ways to create winter outfits from my existing dress collection (with a little help from the lovely ladies on the Vogue Forums).

♥ A-line or single-breasted coats It’s such a shame to put on a nice outfit only to have it completely covered up by a coat. So I adore coats that sit well when worn open. Eventually I would love to build up a mini collection – black, ivory, navy, camel, leopard print, blush.

♥ Cardigans To pair with dresses, or skirts + blouses with the collar peeking out. There are so many lovely choices - peterpan collars, bows, embellishments, faux fur. I am trying to be a bit more creative and match (or mismatch) patterned cardigans with patterned skirts.

♥ Long-sleeve blouses I have been inspired by the lovely kate of scathingly brilliant and the way she layers pretty long-sleeve blouses under sleeveless summer dresses. I have a bunch of blouses for work purposes - pussybow, lace - and I have never thought to try this!

♥ Tights Having a variety of tights is so handy, including cute patterns, ivory lace and even nude fishnets. Sometimes summer dresses can look awkward teamed with black tights, but they can work well with lighter colours.

♥ Brogues Instead of freezing in ballet flats this winter, I would like a pair or two of vintage-style brogues to wear with socks (yay), maybe with a small heel.

♥ Gloves I always have to 'defrost' my hands by gripping my cup of coffee each morning! Probably time to find a cute pair of wrist-length gloves.

♥ Berets For warmth on chilly mornings and to hide messy hair days (they look cute too!).

♥ Hidden layers Where possible, I will be hiding thermal singlets under my dresses and wearing two pairs of tights!

Friday Frock

Outfit of the day from work on Friday followed by the Finders Keepers markets. Most weeks I just can't wait for 'casual Fridays'... some days corporate clothing can really suck the life out of you! The whole concept of work attire is a little bit strange. While I have the occasional lazy I-don't-want-to-get-out-of-my-pajamas-so-I'll-throw-on-anything-days, I mostly tend to feel much happier, and MUCH better about facing the day, when I am wearing something I really love and feel comfortable in. So I can only conclude that we would all be far more productive if we could wear whatever we pleased at work (within reason). Alas, I will continue to embrace my pencil skirts and pussybow blouses Monday through Thursday for the foreseeable future... I guess it's not so bad, just a little repetitive!

On Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the Finders Keepers markets in Sydney with Aelie. The Finders Keepers markets are a free bi-annual event where emerging artists and designers can showcases their goods. Let me tell you, the markets are packed to the rafters with incredible artworks, jewellery, clothing and shoes, pottery, stationary and many other goodies, many of which are handmade or restored vintage items. Mixed with live music and a glass of wine from the bar, it makes for a truly memorable night out. Although I sadly didn't spend my pennies this time (due to my shopping ban), I did leave with a head full of inspiration (and awe!). I have always toyed with the idea of creating and painting my own vintage-inspired tea set, and now I am more motivated than ever!

Okay, so I may have fibbed a little when I said I don't like chocolate. I really do enjoy waking up early on a Sunday morning and buying fresh chocolate croissants and almond danishes from the local bakery and eating them in the sunshine in our courtyard with a coffee and a magazine... bliss! This weekend I focused on recuperating from last week + enjoyed scrambled eggs on malted miche bread at our local cafe + autumn-cleaned our little terrace house + put some work into a new dress I am making (the material includes kittens + bows!) + searched for winter fashion inspiration online (my lightweight floral dresses are NOT made for winter) + struggled with thoughts of 'I don't know what I want to do with my life!'

Having time off work last week has given me lots of time to think... sometimes it's easy to get so distracted by the Monday-to-Friday routine that you forget to sit back and take stock of where you are at in life and where you want to go next. While I do enjoy my current profession, I am not so sure that it's my true calling forever. I would also love to live overseas again, and cross a bunch of things off my life to-do list. So I have been looking for ideas and inspiration, including:

♥ Ordering a bunch of books online like What Color Is Your Parachute?

♥ Making a list of all the things I enjoy and do well

♥ Researching different career paths and what they entail

♥ Planning a bit of travel (need to save first)

♥ Chatting to as many people as possible about what they do and why they love it

Courtyards, Coffee and Craft ♥

I was a little under the weather with a cold on the weekend so I took it easy and enjoyed the sunshine in our courtyard with a blanket + lots of coffee (no matter how hard I try and how much I love teapots, I am just not a tea girl at heart!) + a pile of magazines. On the positive side, it gave me time to finish making these cute cross stitch hoops. I am tempted to pin them up on our bedroom wall above my dressing table and see how long it takes my boyfriend to notice (and no doubt make me take them down! He doesn't yet appreciate 'nanna chic' but I am working on him... slowly). I hope you all had a lovely and eventful weekend xxx

Cross Stitch for Beginners

I am far from an expert on the subject, but for any cross stitch newbies in the mood to get your inner nanna on, here are a few little pointers to get you started!

Cross stitch is a really low-cost craft. All you need is a pattern + a small square of fabric + embroidery thread + a hoop or frame + a needle + scissors (it sounds like a lot but it actually only costs about $15 in total, depending on the size of the pattern).
Aida fabric is the easiest to work with as the weave is large and clear.
You can buy easy (and super cute!) patterns from Etsy. My patterns were purchased from this lovely shop.
Most patterns come with instructions if you are not familiar with the basic stitches required. Alternatively, a good stitch guide with pictures can be found here.
Check out eBay for lovely wooden hoops/frames at very low prices.
Don't be afraid to stray from the pattern as little or as much as you like in terms of colour schemes (as I have). The main thing is to replace light colours with other light colours and dark with dark, so that the light and shadow effects stay true.
You need to give your finished work a quick wash in cold water with a mild detergent to remove any oil marks from your hands - you may not be able to see them but they will show up over time.

I want to save my pennies for a few different things like healthier food + a photography or jewellery-making course + further Italian lessons + a few bits and pieces to make our house more homely + craft supplies + yoga classes + getting film processed + a few nice meals out + a special giveaway for the blog (+ I suppose I should be an adult and add 'savings' to that list too!)

Autumn Lace

There has been an interesting discussion on Vogue Forums recently about how sometimes 'dressing up' in daily life can leave you open to questioning, judgment and even criticism. I have lost count of the number of times somebody has asked me 'why are you so dressed up?', or 'what's the special occasion?' or even 'are you dressed as a Mad Men character?' and it has left me feeling a little self-conscious and defensive. In the past I have even been known to experience such self-doubt that I have undergone a last minute change of outfit before leaving the house! Although I am very glad to say that in the past few years I have found the confidence to now wear whatever takes my fancy, regardless of what people may think (...maybe it comes with age? The inspirational blogging community helps as well!)

Obviously I don't expect everyone I meet to have an interest in fashion (the world would be a very boring place if everyone liked the same thing!), but sometimes I wish that people would just let me be to enjoy my interests, as I let them be to enjoy theirs, whatever they may be. I find it particularly important to find little things in life to enjoy and bring meaning to the passing days. If dressing a certain way gives your world a little bit more colour + joy, I say good for you! ♥

Surprise Sun!

I am *this* close to packing up my summer clothes and unpacking my winter ones (my wardrobe is a little too small to comfortably fit both... okay perhaps I have too many clothes!!) but then a gorgeous sunny day like today comes along and I can't bring myself to do it! I didn't really achieve much this weekend - unless you count eating and sleeping as an achievement - and I feel a little guilty, but I think I just need to learn how to relax sometimes without feeling bad about it. I did get to take my newly altered skirt out for a coffee! I hope everyone had a lovely weekend ♥

(In other news, was anyone else not struck with royal wedding fever? Don't get me wrong, I am all for celebrating love, but I am simply no more excited about the royal wedding than I am about wedding photos published in the local newspaper each week. Maybe that's just me... I was also disappointed to see Clarence House ban the Chaser's coverage of the wedding because it used 'humour and satire' - a sad restriction on freedom of speech.)

Sewing can be thirsty work

As much as I love a long hemline, there is a fine line between 'vintage flair' and 'are you an actual nanna?'. Being short, I often need to take up the hem on my clothes. Altering clothing can be a bit of a pain because you don't get quite the same sense of achievement as you do when making something from scratch. Even so, it is so worth it because it only takes a little while and it saves a lot of money versus going to the tailor. It also means you can snap up some fantastic vintage bargains that have seen better days, with the knowledge that you can fix them with a little love and care.

This long weekend I took up the hem on a dress and a skirt as well as replacing the elastic waistband of the skirt, equating to at least $40 in savings. Which I naturally spent on a good bottle of wine and the most recent Triple J Hottest 100 album, to get me through the alterations. It's funny how life works out sometimes! ♥

I have a confession to make... I don't really like chocolate. I believe I was born without a sweet tooth. That's not to say I didn't compensate this Easter by eating my body weight in savoury goodies like cheese, pickles and olives instead! I hope everyone had a lovely break. I apologise for being MIA, I have been visiting my parents on their organic fruit & vegetable farm + drinking wine on the veranda while soaking up the view + altering dress hems + reading murder mystery novels + buying too much at Lincraft + watching DVDs + crafting it up + basically lounging around doing nothing in particular... bliss! ♥
